Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3: Has the wireless camera come of age?

Consumer Reports Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3: Has the wireless camera come of age? Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3: Has the wireless camera come of age?
For several years, camera makers have tried to bring wireless point-and-shoot digital cameras into the mainstream. Mostly, they’ve been unsuccessful, in part because the setup and operation of transferring images from the camera to either a computer or wireless network has been confusing.
That may be changing. Sony’s update to its rather clunky Cyber-shot DSC-G1, is the Cyber-shot DSC-G3, a 10-megapixel compact with a 4x optical zoom lens. (Click on the image at right for a closer look.) For starters, what sets this camera apart is that it’s the first Wi-Fi camera with a built-in web browser that can upload both still images and video files. According to Sony, this means the camera can upload photos and video directly to photo-sharing sites, like Shutterfly, video-sharing sites, like YouTube, and others via Wi-Fi hot spots.
What appealed to us most about the G3 was that its file transfer process was straightforward, and the interface simple to use. Our tester had set up two accounts ahead of time-one on YouTube, for video, and the other on Picasa, for still images. Once the G3 found a wireless hot spot, it was easy to transfer both videos and stills to the respective accounts. It did take a long time to transfer images: two took a combined 10 minutes or so to transfer.
Another, more conspicuous hurdle for many people is the new Sony camera’s price tag: $500.
