Re: Groups Are Key To Good Health

I would suggest one compares life in a big city such as San Francisco with life in the suburbs such as San Jose. The latter has no sense of community. One can live there forever without ever being part of any social groups. That is considered an advantage, by some, and suburbs are chosen for the ability to separate from undesired social groups. However, if one ever lives in a new suburb, such as San Jose, the effect of separation is much greater than expected. It is a fascinating phenomenon that cannot be thoroughly understood unless one lives in one such suburb. The solution to the stress has been legal and illegal drugs. Joining a social group is not always an act of will.

The quality of a person’s social life could have an even greater impact than diet and exercise on their health and well-being. There is growing evidence that being a member of a social group can significantly reduce the risk of conditions like stroke, dementia and even the common cold.
